Bollywood Dance Classes

Jumped Up Theatre, the Peterborough based Arts charity, delivered a series of Shiamak Bollywood Dance classes from the Aakash Odedra Company in Peterborough in collaboration with the Diwali Association. The two classes, each of 12 sessions, combined dance with a space to talk and find out about wellbeing support.

The 12 week term culminated in Jumped Up Theatre taking a group of 25 women to take part in a London Shiamak event. The group did Peterborough proud with their performance.

Participants said:

‘Thoroughly enjoying the classes. Always feel good after and look forward to the next class. Good to see familiar face at each class’

‘Great fun, completely changed my mood for when I’m feeling at the start to when I finish I’m totally energetic happy and smiling!’

‘Supriya is a teacher who is able to provide challenge as well as make the dancing accessible to all. She does this all with A LOT of enthusiasm and energy. Her passion is infectious! Something that has stuck with me is one week when she said ‘dance for yourself,  no one is looking’. I feel very comfortable in a hall full of friendly ladies just doing my thing… Everyone is encouraging,  supportive and what is clear is that the benefit of these sessions can be measured by the buzz and happy faces when we all leave!’

Across the 12 weeks, there were 431 attendances by 93 different women, from a wide range of backgrounds.

Wellbeing was woven into the session. Here you can see an activity where participants were asked how they were feeling at the start and end of a session.

Sessions were also attended by representatives from different support organisations, including the NHS Primary Care Mental Health ServiceCPSL Mind and the How Are You team.
